make art festival
make art is an international festival dedicated to the integration of free/libre and open source software (FLOSS) in digital arts.
The festival premiered in January 2006. The second edition of make art took place in Poitiers (France), from the 3rd to the 8th of April 2007.
Make Art offers performances, exhibitions, lectures and workshops, focused on the blurred line between art and software programming. The event is dedicated to artists who create their own tools, and apply the same rules to art as to free software development.
Besides the purely technical and legal aspects of free sofware, there is our society’s social and economical future at stake. A generation born during the technological boom, a generation that understands the ins and outs of electronic power struggles in the post-industrial societies, is living in a world that is hardly compatible with today’s economics.
At a time when intellectual property is fiercely debated, while some people cling on to their little bits of territory, others have chosen to share knowledge, art and networks.
make art constitutes a tool for reflecting on the propagation of free software in artistic creation and we want it to be a view onto the social, political and economic myths and realities linked to this phenomenon.

make art est un festival international dédié à l’intégration des logiciels “libres et open source” (FLOSS) dans les arts numériques.
La deuxième édition de make art se déroule à Poitiers (France) du 3 au 8 avril 2007.
make art propose des performances, des expositions, des conférences et des ateliers de création, centrés sur la frontière devenue floue entre art et programmation de logiciels. L’événement est dédié à ces artistes qui conçoivent leurs propres outils de création, et appliquent les règles du développement de logiciels libres à l’art.
Derrière les aspects purement techniques et juridiques du logiciel libre, se cachent les enjeux sociaux et économiques de notre société. Une génération enfantée par le boom technologique, une génération qui comprend les tenants et aboutissants des luttes de pouvoir électronique au sein des sociétés post-industrielles, vit dans un monde difficilement compatible avec les règles économiques actuelles.
A l’heure où les débats sur la propriété intellectuelle font rage et tandis que certains s’accrochent à leurs petits bouts de territoire, d’autres ont choisi la voie de l’échange des savoirs, des arts et du travail en réseau.
make art constitue un outil de réflexion sur la propagation du “libre” dans le domaine de la création artistique et tente de faire le point sur les mythes et réalités sociales, économiques et politiques liés à ce phénomène.
