Yesterday the exhibition chmod +x opened in Sign gallery, Groningen. The works exhibited are “love2″ by Wayne Clements, “island2″ by Martin Howse, “Microcodes” by Pall Thayer and “Class Library” by Graham Harwood. The exhibition presents works that use the computer as a space for social revolution, as location, an ungraspable island that slowly transmits itself to other computers, as actor, mimicking other machines. Executable language, thoughts, ideas and actions translated into code that can be interpreted and executed by a machine. Each of the works show aspects of our relation and history with computers. Even though for non-programmers it might at first be hard to approach the code and the processes it describes, there are fascinating stories to be found.

At this very moment, the workshop Hello wor(l)d! is taking place, part of the chmod+x event. Hello wor(l)d! is an introduction to 3 different artistic approaches to programming, using three different programming styles: graphical, textual (code poetry) and life coding. The workshop gives a taste of all three flavours and is meant as inspiration and exploration for those artists curious about these forms of art but a bit afraid to try them. You cannot learn how to program in 3 days, especially not in 3 different ways, but it is well worth giving different languages and styles a try before starting to learn something new.

Day 1: Pure Data by IOhannes Zmölnig and Agoston Nagy
Day 2: Microcodes by Pall Thayer
Day 3: Fluxus by Dave Griffiths and Gabor Papp

No previous programming experience required, as long as you’re not afraid to work in a terminal. Basic experience with any scripting or markup language (even if it is HTML/CSS) will make it easier to follow.

Art and Design students of the world, come join us for a speed geeking session the 5th of March :) You can either teach a 30 minute workshop about your new hobby, high tech invention or solution to the worlds problems, or you can follow 6 workshops by your genius collegues.

6 short workshops. In this “speed geeking” session you teach each other in a short amount of time a technique, skill or concept. Multiple workshop tables are set up in the space, groups are made. The workshops take place simultaneously. Just like in speed dating, after 30 minutes a bell rings and each group goes to another workshop table. Workshops of all shapes and colours are welcome, from Processing in a nutshell to copyleft ashtray clay modelling. Exchange ideas and make new friends!

Registrations
Limited places available. Send your name, phone number, where and what you study to Sign before February 28 2010.

Call for proposals
To propose a workshop, please send the following information to Sign before February 28 2010:

Your name, email and phone number.

Your workshop concept in min. 50 and max. 150 words.

Where and what you study, and the URL of your website (for on our website).

It’s a GOTO10 event, so FLOSS only! Promise us, scouts honour, that if you’ll be using a computer, you’ll only use FLOSS in your workshop, this includes the operating system (no OSX or windows). If you work with FLOSS but do use a proprietary operating system, you can use the Puredyne live CD to have quick and easy access to Linux without installing it, during the workshop.

The speed geeking session is part of make art: chmod +x art, 2 – 7 March 2010, Groningen (NL).

You can also join the PechaGnucha night, also 5th of March, 20:00 – 22:00, to present your ideas to the world or to sit back, relax and enjoy the presentations of others. The PechaGnucha format forces you to be to the point and show tons of visuals. 20 slides of 20 seconds each, that is all you get, short and sweet.
Workshop with Enrike Hurtado:

Crash course on programing. How to gain control of computers. Computers are pervasive in nowadays world. They are present in almost all moments of our lives, catching a train, sending an email, reading a newspaper… However, the design and production of those systems is controlled mostly by engineers. Thanks to modern programming languages and free software this is not so true any more. Any person
with some reasonable effort and cheap hardware can learn programming and therefore have its say on this. From the perspective of an artist/musician/creator, gaining control of the tools we use or at least understanding how they are built, gives us another perspective on the politics, ethics (and esthetics) implied by them.

In this crash course we will be exposed to tools, ideas and processes used on this field from a practical point of view. We will write small computers programs that communicate different computers in the network, we will control basic graphics, sound and video. We will get content from the internet such as images or data from websites and use it in our applications.

2. Add the sliced carrots and diced onions. Cook for approximately 5
minutes until they start to soften.

3. Add the ground coriander and salt & pepper. Cook for a further 1

Craftivism is an Arnolfini/Relational contemporary art project that responds to the resurgent interest in craft as it relates to socially-engaged art practice. It involves fourteen projects developed by artists and collectives that work with craft-based traditions and activist practices, and who employ the tactics of ‘craftivism’ (combining crafting + activism) to question and disrupt the prevailing codes of mass consumerism.

The project attempts to collapse the distinction between ‘making’ and ‘doing’ – the former associated with craft, the latter with human action. It places an emphasis on interaction and participation in the wider social realm, and employs aspects of self-organisation and ‘open- source’ principles. The artists involved engage with craft-based traditions through diverse practices including art, technology and fashion. Selected works exemplify ‘innovation’ in the general sense that newly invented forms might diverge from established rules and perceived norms.

Craftivism is developed in relation to a range of contexts and includes nine artist-led participatory projects developed with local
communities, the outcomes of which are shown as part of a gallery-based interactive exhibition, online and in free software-related
projects, workshops, talks and the uncurated satellite event UnCraftivism. Events also take place locally at Brandon Hill Park,
Colston Hall, Full Circle St. Paul’s Youth and Family Centre, Knowle West Media Centre and The Mall Bristol.

The project will invite public interaction and provide opportunities to take part, make work and learn craft-based skills to customise
products. It encourages wider communities to embrace the ‘freedom’ to create, modify and distribute products, and in so doing demonstrates the possibilities for people to modify their own lives.

Craftivism is part of the Artist/Activist season, a series of Arnolfini projects in Autumn/Winter 2009/2010 which provides a
socially-active forum for debate and learning around issues of climate change and alternatives to the culture of consumerism.
