GOTO10 are the current and last artists group in residency at Grand Union for the SEARCH ENGINE project. Over the course of their residency, from 16 April to 30 April, GOTO1O will be working in the gallery space, developing the project /points of presence/

Event: Thursday 28 April, 12 – 8 pm: Open studio day and project presentation 6.30 – 8 pm: Project presentation by Rob Canning and Barbara Kukovec

SEARCH ENGINE, curated by Marialaura Ghidini, is a six-week open-residencies programme aimed at facilitating new processes of production, collaborative research and forms of distribution.

For SEARCH ENGINE Grand Union has invited three artists groups – Manu Luksch & Mukul Patel, American Mountains, GOTO10 – to work in the project space for two weeks each; taking as their departure point the investigation of the complex relationship between history and technology, and the way it connects to the Grand Union locale, Digbeth (Birmingham).

Using Wi-Fi signals to create a semi-hidden textual web, GOTO10 will intervene in the public spaces of Digbeth by creating “hacked” spaces.

GOTO10 artists will be exploring the surroundings of Grand Union and collecting information from notice billboards, and other communication nodes. The collected data will subsequently be “remixed and retransmitted” into the gallery locale in the form of a series of 32-character text strings.

By creating multiple simultaneous WLAN access points (Wi-Fi hotspots), these strings will combine to create a constantly evolving poetic structure. This will be transmitted and visible to residents in the Digbeth area as well as being unconsciously collected in the device memory of passers-by. These access points will also act as portals to a series of site-specific galleries only accessible through the local wireless intranet.

« in-between design: rediscovering collaboration in digital art »

make art is an international festival dedicated to free/libre arts and technologies, distributed digital artworks and net art. The sixth edition of make art focuses on works halfway between art and design, collaborative, scalable and participative methods. The adventure “in-between design” begins here, to be imagined in this creative development, where everyone can participate and where artwork keeps on evolving. Are these projects just curiosities or a real alternative to the graphic conformism ruled by an industry that dictates its aesthetic codes? Please come and join us to answer this question…

with Awkward Family Photos (Greece), Marije Baalman (Netherlands), Emanuele Bonetti (Italy), Loredana Bontempi (Italy), Vito Campanelli (Italy), Benjamin Cadon (France), Calcyum (France), Alberto de Campo (Austria), Andrés Colubri

avec Awkward Family Photos (Grèce), Marije Baalman (Pays-Bas), Emanuele Bonetti (Italie), Loredana Bontempi (Italie), Vito Campanelli (Italie), Benjamin Cadon (France), Calcyum (France), Alberto de Campo (Autriche), Andrés Colubri (Argentine), ginger coons (Canada), Dorothé Depeauw (Belgique), Luc Döbereiner (Allemagne), LAFKON (Allemagne), Aditya Mandayam (Inde), Xavi Manzanares (Espagne), Oscar Martin (Espagne), Gabriel Menotti (Brésil), Yota Morimoto (Japon), Jaime Oliver (Pérou), Open Source Publishing (Belgique), Evan Raskob (Etats-Unis), <stdin> (France), Dan Stowell (Grande-Bretagne), Daniel Temkin (Etats-Unis), Dave Young (Irelande), Simon Yuill (Grande-Bretagne).

Workshop with Enrike Hurtado:

Crash course on programing. How to gain control of computers. Computers are pervasive in nowadays world. They are present in almost all moments of our lives, catching a train, sending an email, reading a newspaper… However, the design and production of those systems is controlled mostly by engineers. Thanks to modern programming languages and free software this is not so true any more. Any person
with some reasonable effort and cheap hardware can learn programming and therefore have its say on this. From the perspective of an artist/musician/creator, gaining control of the tools we use or at least understanding how they are built, gives us another perspective on the politics, ethics (and esthetics) implied by them.

In this crash course we will be exposed to tools, ideas and processes used on this field from a practical point of view. We will write small computers programs that communicate different computers in the network, we will control basic graphics, sound and video. We will get content from the internet such as images or data from websites and use it in our applications.
